History of Houston Heights

The neighborhood was founded by Oscar Martin Carter through his Omaha and South Texas Land Company. Houston Heights started out a streetcar suburb, due to Carter’s anticipation of the needs of the public for a viable alternative to residing in the city.

He made several investments in the development of Houston Heights, such as streets, utilities, parks, and schools. He also marketed the land for the middle class worker, pricing the lots affordably. Thus, this led to the increase in population in the area. Aside from middle class workers, Houston Heights also became a good location to wealthy business owners. You can see in the area a good combination of small single-storey cottages and large Victorian homes.

The community continued to grow until the 1940s, until the construction of the road and state highways which resulted in the migration of people to other suburbs. Thus, the population and growth of the neighborhood declined until the 1970s.

At that time, the Houston Heights Association was formed to bring life back to the city through restoration and preservation projects on the numerous historical sites in the area. The public's interest on the community eventually grew. As the preference for traditional homes became the trend, the neighborhood enjoyed increased population and investments. Because of that, Houston Heights has been given new life and is now on the rebound in terms of property values.

Though Houston Heights is primarily a residential area, you can still find several businesses in the neighborhood. And with its easy access to the city, it has now become quite modern.

Aside from the renovation of old homes, new houses and commercial establishments within its area have also emerged. Nowadays, you can experience a good mix of the old and the new when you visit the neighborhood.

So if you want a piece of Houstonian history combined with modern life, one good option for you is to live in Houston Heights.
