Lake Conroe TX History

After the seven-year drought in the 1950s, there was a surge in the reservoir-building business. Lake Conroe was a reservoir built in 1973 as an alternative water supply for the City of Houston. It was a joint project of the City of Houston, the Texas Water Development, and the San Jacinto River Authority.

Though named Lake Conroe, a small part of it is actually in Conroe, Texas. The surface water stretches over 22,000 acres, is 26 miles long, and is 6 miles wide at the widest point. Lake Conroe's shoreline extends to 157 miles.

Lake Conroe started to supplement groundwater sources in Montgomery County in September 2015.
