The “Rice” in Rice Military came from the surname of the wealthy family that used to own the area. William M. Rice (of the same family) even left a good part of his fortune for the founding of Rice University in Houston Texas.
The “Military” part, on the other hand, came from nearby Camp Logan. Camp Logan is a former training camp for soldiers during the First World War.
Bankers Trust Co. later on paid a sum of $54,425 to the Rice family and another party for the entire Rice Military area. The same company initiated the real estate development for Rice Military.
About 20 years ago, most of the homes in Rice Military Houston are bungalows and shotgun-type houses. An influx of Downtown Houston professionals looking for low-priced properties started purchasing Rice Military homes around 2003. The growing demand paved the way for renovation of older homes and construction of more modern single-family houses and townhomes.
Today Rice Military is a neighborhood of over 2,000 homes managed by a very active homeowners/civic group.

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) serves Rice Military. The public schools associated with homes in Oak Forest include:

Memorial Elementary School has a “Recognized” standing from Texas Education Agency (TEA). GreatSchools.org notes the school’s 4 out of 5 stars rating. It also has a 6 out of 10 academic score, highlighted by its Grade 3 pupils testing 93% and 100% in Math and Reading. Both are well above the state average.
- Hogg Middle School
Hogg Middle School carries an “Academically Acceptable” TEA rating. Greatschools ranked it 5 out 10, with its students’ test scores hovering around the state average.
- Lamar HighSchool
TEA rates Lamar High School as “Recognized”. Lamar High School currently has the biggest number of students who graduate with the IB Diploma in Texas.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational programme primarily aimed at students aged 16–19. It serves as a qualification for entry into higher education.

Most of the homes in Rice Military were built in the 1950s. Much like other neighborhoods near or within Houston’s Inner Loop, Rice Military went through a shift in home architecture during the 1990s to early 2000.
Many Downtown Houston professions started buying old properties 10 years ago. They proceeded to either renovate homes or demolish them in favor of more modern housing. Developers have also started large-scale housing projects focused on new construction homes.
Rice Military remains one of the few Inner Loop Houston neighborhoods with homes available in the $300,000 – $500,000 price point. Young professionals and empty nesters put a high premium to its close proximity to Houston hubs such as Downtown Houston, Galleria, and Museum District.
Median lot size of Rice Military homes is at 2,500 square feet. The medium-size lots best fit townhomes development.
Many developers have purchased lots in Rice Military and begun construction on new townhomes. The most common Rice Military townhomes for sale are in the $280,000 to $500,000 range. Townhomes prices depend on the property’s lot size, style, and exact location.
Biggest difference between townhomes and single-family homes is that townhomes share a wall with one or more neighbors. However, similar with single-family homes, you still own the dirt from the center of earth to infinity.
Houston townhomes have become very popular as a cost-effective alternative to single-family homes or condominiums.
