Sweetwater TX History

Sweetwater is in Sugar Land, which shares the same history. In 1853, the Oakland Plantation changed hands from the Williams. Post-Civil War, Colonel E. H. Cunningham purchased the 12,500-acre plantation. He built a sugar refining plant and a town in the area.

Isaac H. Kempner and William T. Eldridge acquired the Ellis Plantation. It covers 5,300 acres adjacent to the Cunningham Plantation. In 1908, the partners bought the Cunningham Plantation as well. This led to the rise of the Imperial Sugar Company and the town built around it: Sugar Land.

Sugar Land was a company town. It has ample housing for employees, schools, a hospital, and several retail and entertainment establishments. Today, Sugar Land continues to flourish. It is home to 13 master-planned communities and golf courses.
