Downtown Houston currently offers Free Wireless Internet!
The City of Houston and Downtown District are partnering to launch a free WiFi pilot program.
Now you can kick back and work outside from anywhere downtown, thanks to the launching this week of free outdoor wireless access. All you'll need to access the new free WiFi service is a WiFi-enabled computer or portable or hand-held device.
We hope you will take advantage of this service and if successful, FREE WiFi will become a permanent amenity to downtown workers, residents and visitors!
In order to get up and running at a WiFi hotspot, you just need a WiFi-enabled computer or portable or hand-held device.
Then just follow these easy steps.
1) Locate the wireless icon on your desktop toolbar and right click
2) Click on “Viewable Wireless Networks”
3) Select “Houston WiFi” and click “Connect”
4) Once connected, click on your Internet browser and the Houston WiFi Welcome Page will pop up
5) Register or if you are a repeat user, sign in
6) Enjoy!
Keep in mind that the free Houston WiFi network is going to work better in some areas than others.
For the most current list of hotspots, go to
www.houstontx.gov/houstonwifi.
This service is designed for outside use only, but, there is a good chance that you will be able to connect to the free Houston WiFi network in locations other than the designated hotspots, including some indoor locations.
Service may vary in strength and availability. There may be instances where you receive a strong signal but are not able to connect. Examples include tree or building obstructions.
So as the fall weather moves in, grab your computer, head to the nearest park bench and enjoy the great outdoors without missing a beat.
