It began as a trading post in 1826. Then, it became the first county seat of Montgomery County.

The town experienced a building boom in the 1850s. Some of the original homes still exist. By 1900, several businesses operated in Montgomery. However, the railroads bypassed the town, and the county seat moved to Conroe.
