Broad Oaks Houston History

Galleria Neighborhood

Like most of west Houston, the area now known as Broad Oaks used to be a heavily wooded rural area. Farms and sawmills, as well as a handful of homes, dotted what were then unincorporated areas outside of Houston.

The housing boom after World War II sparked development in the area. Developers bought large parcels around the Buffalo Bayou and started building subdivisions like Broad Oaks. These were marketed toward middle- and upper-class families.

Today, Broad Oaks – and nearby neighborhoods like Tanglewood, Stablewood, and the affluent Memorial Villages – feature some of Houston's most expensive real estate.

Some areas are deed-restricted, preserving the overall country-living atmosphere of the neighborhood.
