Clear Lake Houston can trace its roots back to a sprawling 30,000-acre ranch previously owned by James Marion West, a prominent businessman. West sold his property to Humble Oil – now known as ExxonMobil – after discovering oil on the property.

During the early 1960s, the Spacecraft Center of NASA set up shop next door, spurring the growth of Clear Lake. In 1963, Humble Oil and the Del E. Webb Corporation formed Friendswood Development to develop 15,000 acres of the property.

Clear Lake City annexed the city of Houston in 1977.

The community consists of several neighborhoods: Bay Forest, Bay Glen, Bay Knoll, Bay Oaks, Bay Pointe, Brook Forest, Brookwood, Clear Lake Forest, Camino South, Meadowgreen, Middlebrook, and Northfork, Oakbrook, Oakbrook West, and Pinebrook.
