Fresno TX History

Fresno is situated in northeastern Fort Bend County, Texas, about twenty miles northeast of Richmond.

It was named by a settler from Fresno, California, and was established on land that was patented in 1824. In its early days, Fresno was surrounded by cotton plantations and acquired a post office in 1910.

Over the years, its population saw fluctuations - from just thirty-two people in 1914 to a peak of 6,603 in the year 2000. The town's growth was influenced by factors like a telephone connection, a general store, and the expansion of the International-Great Northern Railroad.

The population increase during the 1970s and 1980s was attributed to the growth of nearby Houston.
