Grapeland Area TX History

Grapeland was founded in 1872 and got its name for having wild grapevine in this region. This region started as a mail drop for settlers in the area. The arrival of railroads sparked the development of this town.

The town grew as a railroad depot and commercial hub for nearby cotton farmers. By the early 1900s, Grapeland had five general stores, two cotton gins, mills, a hotel, a newspaper, and various other businesses.

Cotton, ranching, and forestry are the main factors contributing to the local economy. Post-World War II, peanuts replaced cotton as the primary crop.

Grapeland grew as settlers built farms and ranches, dividing land for homes and businesses. Due to nearby oil discoveries, real estate surged to accommodate the rising population.

In the 20th century, Grapeland expanded, aided by infrastructure upgrades and urbanization. It drew individuals seeking affordable small-town living due to its proximity to Houston and Dallas.

Today, Grapeland continues to be a great place to enjoy peaceful country living with modern city comforts in East Texas. It has further developed modern amenities such as schools and healthcare facilities. Despite the improvement, Grapeland maintained its unique community spirit and charm.
