Neighborhood Guide: Hyde Park Houston
Located in the west-central area of Neartown/Montrose, Hyde Park has River Oaks and Upper Kirby to the west, Washington Avenue/Rice Military to the north, and Midtown and Downtown to the east. The Museum District and the Medical Center area are south of the neighborhood, just across the Southwest Freeway (US 59).
One of Houston’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods, the area upon which Hyde Park now sits was previously the property of Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second President of the Republic of Texas. The neighborhood was officially established in 1893, and was annexed into Houston between 1905 and 1906.
Years later, Houston Land Corporation executive J. W. Link bought and developed the 250-acre parcel now known as Montrose.
Today, Hyde Park has an active civic association with some deed-restricted areas.
Like the other neighborhoods in the Montrose area, Hyde Park features a diverse mix of homes, including older bungalows, elegant estates, mid-rise condos, townhomes, and patio homes.
Architectural styles vary, ranging from Victorian, French, Mediterranean, Contemporary, and Traditional, among others. Prices depend on a number of factors, including location, and size and age of the home.
