Katy Southwest Texas History


Katy Southwest's history is tied to the Greater Katy Area History.

In the mid-1800s, Katy was called Cane Island. A land grant for James J. Crawford included Cane Island during this period.

The area only had four residents three decades after the land grant.

The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad brought rapid and unprecedented growth to the area. In 1895, the area caught James Oliver Thomas's sight where he laid out development plans.

Katy got its name from the KT moniker of the MKT (now part of Union Pacific) railroad. As the train opened access to the area, families move in during the 1900s. These pioneering families established farms and ranches.

Katy became a municipality in 1945. It had a city council and a mayor.
