The Greater Katy area was once made up of farms and cattle ranches. This early history is apparent in the names of the master-planned communities around the area today: Cinco Ranch, Cross Creek Ranch, Pine Mill Ranch, Silver Ranch, and Cardiff Ranch.
Much earlier, the area now known as the city of Katy used to be called Cane Island, named for the creek that ran through it. Sometime in the 1890s, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad started operating in the area, bringing growth into the small settlement.
A few years later, James Oliver Thomas filed a post office application, in which he called the small town Katy. Railroad officials had called the railroad “the KT”.
Other developments led to further growth in and around the city of Katy, including the completion of Interstate 10, the booming oil industry, and Houston’s housing boom.
