The city of Katy, once a small settlement, grew from a prairie once known as Cane Island. It owes its early growth spurt to the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, which started operating in the area in 1895.
The name Katy came from railroad officials’ nickname for the line, “the KT”.
During this period, people started settling into the area, raising cattle and planting crops like rice, peanuts, and cotton. As its eastern neighbor Houston grew, so did Katy. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1945, and more development came into the area upon the completion of Interstate 10.
In 1996, the WoodCreek Reserve Development Company (with J. Troy Maxwell behind the helm) offered to buy a parcel of land south of Interstate 10 from the Elizabeth Poorman-Moore family. The family had owned the land for decades and had farmed rice until they turned the property into a family retreat.
The developers had a vision to turn the Poorman Family Ranch into a community that incorporated the area’s natural beauty into the master plan.
Today, the WoodCreek Reserve features some of the most sought after real estate in the city of Katy. Its homes are zoned to the best schools in the district, the community has maintained its wooded surroundings, and residents can enjoy a full range of amenities.
The WoodCreek Reserve offers a great set of community amenities, and perhaps the most popular of which is the neighborhood’s 100-acre nature reserve.
The lush greenery surrounding the Willow Fork of the Buffalo Bayou was preserved, celebrating the land’s old oaks and natural environment. The nature reserve has several of WoodCreek Reserve’s amenities, including the sports fields, stocked lakes, picnic areas, tennis courts, and nature trails.
The neighborhood also features parks, walking trails, and a recreation center. The recreation center has a swimming pool, a cabana area, and a playground.
For retail, residents can take a short drive to the Katy Mills Mall. More options are available farther southeast at the LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch.
