La Marque TX History


La Marque's long history dates back to the Republic of Texas. The rural community of Highlands was established and given the name. It settles along the banks of Highland Bayou.

The town was famous as Buttermilk Station during the Civil War. Due to the soldiers buying buttermilk there when traveling between Galveston and Houston. It also used to be the largest residential area in Texas that had no incorporation until 1953.

The city population in 2010 was around 16,000. La Marque experienced significant growth in the 1950s as the business grew in the area. During this transition period, La Marque supported the Texas City petrochemical complex.

In 2019, Locals benefited from a levee system that protects against hurricanes and a range of housing options.
