• Oak Forest Elementary at 1401 W 43rd St, opened in the year 1949. Also a Vanguard magnet school, Oak Forest promotes academic excellence and community involvement. The school serves PK-5 and boasts above-average ratings for math and reading proficiency. It has consistently been one of HSID's best elementary schools serving the neighborhood.

• Sinclair Elementary at 6410 Grovewood Lane is named after Thomas Albert Sinclair, one of the founders of Heights Hospital. It opened way back in the year 1959 and holds HISD's pride in being the only elementary with a technology-based communications magnet school that focuses on STEM. Sinclair is also proud to have a lovely campus with tall trees and spacious grounds that add to its charm.

Middle Schools

Public middle schools zoned to Lazybrook include:

• Frank Black Middle at 1575 Chantilly Ln is named after Frank Black, a notable Houston educator. Founded in the year 1957, Frank Black Middle is one of the premier middle schools in HISD. It also has one of the largest campuses with a total of 6 buildings on 30 acres of land. Given these amenities, Frank Black is proud to provide its students with an excellent setting for an exceptional education.

• Hamilton Middle at 139 East 20th St. is named after the founding father of the United States, Alexander Hamilton. It is a Vanguard Magnet school that focuses on S.T.E.A.M and has several beyond-the-classroom and extracurricular activities for its students. Hamilton Middle serves grades 6-8 and has been ranked as one of the Most Resilient Schools in Houston.

High Schools

Public high schools located in Lazybrook include:

• Heights Highschool at 413 East 13th St. was established in the year 1926 as Raegan Highschool. It serves grades 9-12 and is part of HISD. The school was renamed in the year 2016. A Magnet School for Computer Technology, Heights Highschool also offers International Baccalaureate Program. It boasts spacious school grounds and campuses which were added when the campus did major renovations in the year 2006.

• Waltrip Highschool at 1900 West 34th Street has HISD's Research and Technology magnet program that aims to prepare its students for college. It opened in the year 1959 and serves grades 9-12. With its campus built for over 50 years, renovations have been made in careful consideration of retaining its significant architectural features.

Lazybrook Houston History

Taking its name from the White Oak Bayou, Lazybrook is one of Houston’s late bloomers. Lazybrook remained undeveloped and covered in trees between the early 1940s and the 1950s.

During the early 1940s and 1950s, Lazybrook remained largely wooded and undeveloped. The development of the top Houston freeways spurred the neighborhood’s suburban growth.

In the 1800s, German farmers firstly owned the Lazybrook and Timbergrove area. It was also the site of a top oil discovery during the 1930s. Eureka Yard (a nearby railroad yard) and St. John’s German Lutheran Church (one of the first churches built in Houston) serve as a reminder of these years. Both landmarks remain standing today.

Lazybrook underwent top residential and urban development in the 1960s and 1970s. About 20-30 years ago, many young professionals started to buy ranch-style homes in the area. Some built newer, more modern properties, while others opted to renovate them.

Real estate developers also started numerous townhome projects around Lazybrook. Heritage Creek, Timbergrove Heights, and Timbergrove Terrace are among the townhome developments.

Residents founded the Lazybrook Civic Club in 1960. One of the organization’s main objectives is to uphold all building regulations. Second, an advocate for changes. And lastly, bring about changes. These objective aims to advance the community and the welfare of its residents. The Civic Club is an active and volunteer-based group.

Today, Lazybrook is a quiet but sprawling neighborhood with nine sections. The nine sections map out the neighborhood’s deed restrictions, paving the way for a well-developed community.

Fun Things To Do Near Lazybrook Houston

While most of Lazybrook is residential, numerous retail, dining, and entertainment options are nearby.

Northwest Mall is just across the Loop on Hempstead Road. Jester Village Shopping Center is closer to home within TC Jester Boulevard and W 18th St.

For more options, residents can take a quick drive to nearby districts. The Houston Heights, Galleria, and Rice Military are examples.

For outdoor entertainment, residents have plenty of options nearby. Jaycee Park and West 11th Street Park are popular options, along with the White Oak Bayou Trail. Jaycee Park is just a few blocks from Lazybrook homes. The park features a basketball court, tennis courts, a walking trail, a water playground, picnic tables, and a playground.

The lush 20-acre area north of West 11th Street is a nature park, home to several species of birds and butterflies. A walking trail runs through the wooded park. Some are popular with birdwatchers, while others are simply benches for admiring the park's lush surroundings.
