Neighborhood Guide: Memorial Park Houston
Memorial Park covers a verdant 1,500-acre area nestled at the southeast corner of Loop 610 and I-10. It is one of the three largest urban parks in Houston, alongside Hermann Park and MacGregor Park.
The park area and its surrounding neighborhoods are bordered by Loop 610 to the west, I-10 (Katy Freeway) to the north, and follows the contours of the Buffalo Bayou to the south.
The vast expanse of Memorial Park used to be a US Army boot camp. Commissioned in 1917 to 1918, Camp Logan served as a training ground for servicemen during World War I. A hospital for recuperating soldiers was later built on the property, together with one of Houston’s first golf courses.
After a few years, the camp was decommissioned and the land was returned to the city. In 1924, the park – meant to commemorate the soldiers who had fought in the war – opened its doors to the public.
Today, Memorial Park and its surrounding neighborhoods – Camp Logan, Crestwood, Glen Cove, and Rice Military – still bear some traces of the area’s history. The park area is still largely wooded, but is now crisscrossed with multi-use trails and packed with outdoor activity areas.
The park is home to the Memorial Park Golf Course, the Seymour Lieberman Exercise Trail, and the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. Facilities for tennis, volleyball, swimming, baseball, croquet, and other sports are also available.
Memorial Park homes are highly desirable due to their great location, proximity to park amenities, and easy access to Houston’s key districts. Retail, entertainment, and employment hubs like the Galleria and Downtown Houston are minutes away.
Memorial Park real estate offers some diversity. Beautifully updated homes from the 1920s, custom-built estate-style homes, grand mansions, new construction townhomes, and patio homes are available in the area.
Homes in the area typically feature 3- to 4-bedroom floor plans. Some of the most expensive Memorial Park luxury homes offer more space, with up to 5 to 6 bedrooms. Lot sizes are mid- to large sized by Houston standards, ranging from 5,000 to more than 40,000 square feet.
Memorial Park homes for sale typically start at around $300,000. Bigger and newer properties can fetch more than $1,500,000.
Memorial Park is within the 77007 zip code of Harris County.
