Oak Hill Houston History

Like most areas in close-in Memorial, the land where Oak Hill now sits used to be largely rural. The Memorial area was mostly made up of farms, timber mills, and stables.

During the post-WWII years (1950s and 1960s), Houston was growing, expanding westward past the Inner Loop. The lush areas surrounding the Buffalo Bayou was ripe for development, and several builders bought up land in the area.

Later, some Memorial neighborhoods incorporated into independent cities, particularly the Memorial Villages. Others didn’t, and were annexed by the city of Houston.

Today, close-in Memorial remains one of the most affluent and expensive areas in the Houston (specifically the 77024 ZIP code). The neighborhoods’ spacious lots, vintage ranch-style homes, and luxury properties continue to draw homebuyers into the area.

Fun Things To Do Near Oak Hill

Oak Hill residents have plenty of options available within a short drive away. One of Houston’s largest urban parks, Memorial Park, is less than half a mile away from the community.

Miles of hike-and-bike trails run through the park, the most popular of which is the Seymour Lieberman Exercise Trail, a 2.93-mile trail made of crushed granite. The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is also within the park.

The Memorial Park Golf Course is another popular option within the park. It features an 18-hole John Bredemus-designed municipal golf course with a course rating of 73 and a slope rating of 122.

For retail, residents don’t have to travel very far. There are plenty of retail and entertaiment options available north of I-10 (like the Marq-E Entertaiment Center). More are available within a couple of miles, notably the numerous shopping centers within Uptown Houston.
