The 120-acre area called Memorial Heights is often lumped together with the subdivisions and neighborhoods that make up Rice Military/Washington Avenue. The area bordered by Washington Avenue to the north, Washington Cemetery to the east, Memorial Drive to the south, and Heights Boulevard to the west was somewhat forgotten up until the late 1990s.
Memorial Heights’ rebirth came in 1997, in the form of a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ). A TIRZ is a measure taken to redevelop forgotten and abandoned neighborhoods.
Developers started buying up land within the Memorial Heights. The area’s old homes and rice silos were then torn down and replaced with upscale residential and commercial buildings.
Development for the Park at Memorial Heights started a few years later, and was built out in 2007.
Today, Memorial Heights has a great mix of retail, multi-family dwellings, and gated communities.

For something closer to home, residents can visit Spotts Park, nestled right next to the gated community. The 16.24-acre park offers a number of amenities for visitors of all ages: a children’s playground, basketball and volleyball courts, a picnic area, and walking trails.
The 18,000-square foot shopping center along Studemont and Washington also has plenty of dining, retail, and entertainment offerings. With Washington Avenue just a stone’s throw away, Park at Memorial Heights residents have a lot of options from which to choose.
