Middle Schools

• Lanier Middle School at 2600 Woodhead Street. The school is the only Vanguard Magnet and IB Middle Years Program World School in the district. They focus on arts and design, as well as science and mathematics, among others.

• Carnegie Vanguard High School at 1501 Taft Street. Established in the fall of 2002, Carnegie is the only Vanguard high school in HISD. They offer HISD Advanced (HADV), Pre-AP, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

• DeBakey High School for Health Professionals at 2545 Pressler. Founded in 1972, it offers 19 Advanced Placement classes. DeBakey HSHP provides pre-college programs in health sciences as a magnet school under HISD.

• Challenge Early College High School at 5601 W Loop S. Founded in 2003, the school provides a four-year program for Grades 9 to 12. Graduates of CECHS will have both a high school diploma and accumulated 61 college credits to any institution.

• Houston Academy for International Studies at 1810 Stuart. Opened in 2006, HAIS offers an early college magnet program integrated with Houston Community College. Graduates will both receive a high school diploma and transferrable college units to any institution.

Preston Place TX History

The area of what was known as Preston Place was first developed in 1917 as part of West University Place. Former Tennessee governor Ben Hooper led the development. The city got its name from the adjacent Rice University.

Preston Place residents and others from neighboring areas refused to consolidate to the larger and expanding Houston in 1939.

They adopted a city charter one year later, with the area now known as Preston Place joining West University Place as one of its 26 neighborhoods.
