Sugar Lakes TX History

Sugar Lakes is linked to the history of Sugar Land.

Sugar Land's history traces back to 1828 when Samuel M. Williams received the land. Nathaniel F. Williams later ran Oakland Plantation, growing crops like cotton and sugarcane. In 1843, they set up a raw sugar mill. Benjamin F. Terry and William J. Kyle bought the plantation in 1853 and brought a railway. A post office opened in 1858, but after struggles, it closed in 1886.

E. H. Cunningham invested in a sugar refinery and a railroad in the 1890s, leading to growth. In 1906, Isaac H. Kempner and William T. Eldridge transformed it into a company town for Imperial Sugar Company. They built levees and drainage systems. Sugarcane farming ended in 1928 due to disease and taxes.

With ups and downs, Sugar Land's population grew, and was incorporated in 1959.
