Sugar Land South TX History

Samuel M. Williams and his brother Nathaniel settled on "Oakland Plantation" at the time. It was named after the numerous oaks that grow on the property. Corn, cotton, and sugarcane were grown on the Williams' plantation. The plantation was sold in 1853. Colonel E. H. Cunningham bought the 12,500-acre plantation after the Civil War and built a sugar refining plant and a town on it.

In 1908, the partners purchased the Cunningham Plantation. The purchase included a sugar mill and refinery. This resulted in the rise of the Imperial Sugar Company and the town that grew up around it. Presently the area is called Sugar Land.

In 1959, Sugar Land became a general law city.
