New Territory TX History
Sugar Land was once dotted with a wide variety of oaks. Thus, the area was aptly named “Oakland Plantation”. Samuel and Nathaniel Williams are brothers who first settled in the area. Corn, cotton, and sugarcane are the produce of the Williams brothers. In 1853, Colonel E. H. Cunningham purchased the 12,500-acre plantation. He built a sugar refining plant and a town.
Isaac H. Kempner and William T. Eldridge acquired the adjacent Ellis Plantation which covers 5,300 acres. They bought the Cunningham Plantation in 1908. Thus, the Imperial Sugar Company was created and Sugar Land was built around it.
From the 1910s to the late 1950s, Sugar Land was a company town. It had housing, schools, a hospital, and commercial stores for employees. Sugar Land became a general law city in 1959.
New Territory first started in 1986. The development of the area was incorporated with green space, landscaping, and lakes. Developers allotted about 150 acres of New Territory for commercial construction.
