It has Buffalo Speedway to the west, Bissonnet Street to the north, Wakeforest Avenue to the east, and Plumb Street to the south. The neighborhood sits north of Rice Court, and west of Krenzler Court, Evanston, Quenby Court, Tangley Place, and Preston Place.

Ben Hooper, a former Tennessee governor, started development in what is now known as West University Place in 1917. Named for its location west of (what was then) Rice Institute, the small community’s first homes sold within the same year.
Several West University area subdivisions were developed later, Monticello in particular was built sometime during the 1930s.
It neighborhood later incorporated. The city of West University Place formally adopted a city charter by 1940.
