Westchase TX History

Robert E. Smith, a Houston oilman and philanthropist famous for founding the Houston Colt.45s baseball team, bought large portions of Westchase in the 1950s.

Smith had the most land in Harris County by 1964 with 11,000 acres, more than any other landowner. His ranch extended east past Beltway 8 and incorporated the Westchase neighborhood.

When Westchase Corporation, the company that would later develop into the modern management district, acquired Smith's 760 acres of land, work on preparing the land parcels for corporate development got under way. Chevron and Western Geophysical were two of the first companies to set up shop there.

Westchase District's establishment in 1995 ensured the region's capacity to control its future. Many roles of the original developers were taken on by the District, including marketing, planning, and infrastructure development.
