Relocate to Houston TX: What If Your Spouse’s Career Requires You to Relocate

How To Relocate To Houston TX Without The Usual Hassle

Thinking about relocating to Houston, TX?

Whose career is prioritized between yours and your spouses’? If it is your spouse’s career, then you will have to cope with all the changes that surround that career.

This means that when your spouse has a career-related move to another city, state, or country, you have to tag along.

This is not easy. Not just because you have to pack all your bags, sell some stuff, and bring along some furniture, but also because you have to give up whatever career you currently have.

Even if you are having your own case of wanderlust, moving to another place where you do not have a job prospect can be very difficult. It is not just difficult; it was found out that unemployment and moving to another place are both considered top stressors.

Other top stressors include tragic events such as a natural catastrophe or disaster, a family member’s death, and the loss of a spouse to either death or divorce. Combining two top stressors can cause emotional disaster, something that your spouse may or may not understand.

According to a survey by the Employee Relocation Council based on Washington D.C., 75% of transferees are married. Just imagine how many spouses are experiencing the double stress of unemployment and sudden relocation.

Companies do not really provide any compensation to the spouse who has to deal with the transfer. All they care about is that the transfer is an important move for the company. It is also some sort of a promotion that their employee must appreciate.

While it is tough to keep a career or to look for a new one in a strange place, the spouse who is doing the tagging-along can still make the move work for him or her.

Learning a new skill that will be more fitting to the new environment tag-along spouses will be living will help them find a rewarding career for themselves in the new place. Some tag-along spouses already anticipate future moves. Instead of thinking of a 9-to-5 job as a career, they are thinking of jobs that can be taken with them during each of the moves. This way, there will no longer be harsh transitions associated with moving to another place.

To help you along the way, you can consult a career counselor about the possible paths you can take. Analyze your own situation. Ask family and friends for recommendations and contacts in the new place you are moving to. You can even seek the help of your spouse’s human resources department to find out if they have employment programs for the spouses of their employees.
