University Area Map

University Area is within the famous Houston Inner Loop. Loop 610, known as the Inner Loop, marks the border between the inner City of Houston and its surrounding areas.

During World War II in the 1940s, formal plans to build a highway around Houston occurred. The loop was intended as a "Defense Loop" to facilitate the movement of troops and materials around the City.

Interstate 610 construction did not start until the 1950s. It is due to limited resources caused by the emerging war. The completion of Interstate 610 is during the year 1973.

Most of Houston's wealth is around the Inner Loop. It has several of Houston’s major employment centers, and 26 colleges and universities. The nation’s largest medical center is nearby. Galleria and other art-related centers are also accessible.
